We had the great honor to photograph a senior portrait session for two beautiful Hawaiian girls.
We shot their session in Hana, where their ancestors are buried. I felt that it was a wonderful way to pay tribute to the generations that came before them. We also took more photos at Maliko Gulch, where one of the girls offered a “ho`okupu” tribute to her Kupuna!
A “ho`okupu” tribute means gifts and offerings, while Kupuna, refers to a grandparent, ancestor or an honored elder! I felt beyond fortunate to be able to witness this heartwarming ceremony and capture it for them!
It’s moments like this that makes us realize just how grateful we are to be able to do something like this on their land and how even more grateful that we are able to call this island… home!
It’s a “makana” (gift) that will forever have a special place in my heart.
