As Maui photographers, we spend a lot of time chasing golden light and creating memories for our clients. But when we’re not out photographing or editing, we love exploring this island we’re lucky to call home. From volunteering and farm days to pie stops and sunset walks, here are ten things we love to do on Maui that keep our hearts full and inspired.
1. Volunteering at Maui Animal Farm
We love spending time at Maui Animal Farm in Launiupoko — feeding goats, brushing ponies, and watching kids light up with joy. It’s such a fun, down-to-earth place that reminds us what aloha really feels like. Helping out here keeps us connected to community and grounded in the slower pace of Maui life.

2. Pie Breaks at Leoda’s
After a morning of Maui photo sessions, you’ll often find us at Leoda’s Kitchen and Pie Shop. Their banana cream and chocolate haupia pies are pure happiness in a crust. We love the cozy, local vibe — it’s the perfect treat after chasing sunsets or sandy toes all day.

3. Give Back with Maui Rapid Response
Maui Rapid Response has a special place in our heart! Their team connects people across the island through compassion, coordination, and hands-on support. Whether it’s helping distribute supplies, supporting recovery efforts, or showing up for neighbors in need, being part of MRR reminds us what aloha in action truly means.

4. Sunset Walks at Ironwoods Beach
Ironwoods Beach is one of our absolute favorite places on Maui. The cliffs, the waves, and the light — it’s everything we love about this island. Even when we’re not behind the camera, we can’t help but pause and admire the glow.

5. Upcountry Days at Maui Alpaca
Sometimes we trade palm trees for pastures and head up to Maui Alpaca in Kula. It’s peaceful, green, and full of the cutest alpacas you’ll ever meet. Spending a day upcountry helps us slow down, breathe the cool mountain air, and remember why Maui feels like magic everywhere you go. Getting to squeeze all the wonderful creatures that live on a farm is as close to heaven as we can get!

6. Lunch at Miss Arepa
When we want a colorful, flavorful lunch, we head to Miss Arepa. Their Venezuelan arepas are made with so much heart — and they’re perfect for refueling after a sunrise session. We love supporting small local spots that bring global flavor to our Maui community.

7. Thrifting at Rainbow Attic
If you know us, you know we love a good thrift hunt. Rainbow Attic Maui in Kīhei is our happy place — full of vintage aloha shirts, beachy home finds, and one-of-a-kind treasures. It’s a fun, sustainable way to shop local and find little pieces of Maui history.

8. Thrift Adventures at Maui Mood Swings
Our other favorite thrift stop is Maui Mood Swings in Wailuku. It’s bright, quirky, and full of personality — just like the people who run it. You never know what you’ll find, but that’s half the fun.

9. Gelato at Hula Scoops
After a sunset photo shoot, we love ending the day at Hula Scoops. Their local flavors — coconut, mango, and Kona coffee — taste like Maui in every bite. It’s Maui photographers favorite little treat after a golden-hour session.

10. Walking the “Fairy Forest” in Honolua
There’s something magical about the rainforest in Honolua, lovingly called the “Fairy Forest.” We love wandering through the lush, shaded paths — but we always do so with deep respect for the land (ʻāina) and the ancestors (iwi kūpuna) who rest there. If you visit, please walk gently and honor this sacred place.

Why We Love Maui Life
Each of these moments — whether it’s volunteering, savoring pie, or finding thrift treasures — keeps us connected to what makes Maui special. It’s the same love we as Maui photographers bring to every photo session: real connection, local beauty, and a deep sense of aloha.
